What will happen to Daniel Ricciardo?

Dani must earn the Number 1 driver status within McLaren, says Seidl

McLaren will debut a driver pair in 2021 with the arrival of our Daniel. The Australian, who already knows what it is like to climb to the top of the podium (he has done it seven times) and fight one-on-one with the big favorites, might suggest that the Woking team has already found its new Number 1, but it looks like he will have to earn that status.

The head of the papaya team, Andreas Seidl, has not hesitated to point out that his two pupils will fight on an equal footing, and therefore Lando Norris could end up becoming McLaren’s new leader if he demonstrates the skills to do so.

As long as I am head of the team, no one is gonna start the season as number one. If someone has as long a way to go as we do, you need two pilots just like each other, like we had in 2019 with Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris.

Together with Lando and Daniel, we are going to have another great couple of drivers, not only sporty, but also representing McLaren as a brand

Ricciardo, back at the controls of the RS19

One of the big news of the last few weeks has been the imminent goodbye of Sebastian Vettel from the Ferrari team.

The impact has been so great that it has even taken people from the Paddock itself by surprise, as has been the case with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who was caught off guard by the march:

I did not really see Sebastian’s farewell to Ferrari coming. He always hides his cards. When he switched from Red Bull to the Italians, there were no rumors, it just happened.

That is typical of German. Sebastian will continue if he joins a winning team, since a four-time world champion who has achieved a lot in sport and has no financial problems, no longer has a role in any middle-class team.

However, the withdrawal fits Vettel’s character better.

It would be a shame for the sport, but for him it would be the best solution if he does not have a place in a team at the top of the table

The future of the Germanic player is still unknown, so there are those who dare to pair him with a new team. This is the case of former motor racing driver David Coulthard, who does not rule out a possible transfer to the future Aston Martin team:

I have always thought that in a sport like Formula One everything you can imagine is possible. There are many interesting things for Vettel, and one of them is Lawrence Stroll’s desire for success in a future with Aston Martin.

Now he only has Mercedes as his only safe bet when it comes to performance before entering the unknown with Renault or Aston Martin itself.

There he can become a shareholder and move on to another phase in his career. It may be an option, something that allows you to step aside

Applying new rules after the pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic will have a serious economic effect on Formula 1, so the teams are already working on it.

Promoted by FIA President Jean Todt, they have accepted a ‘New Deal’; to reverse the next stage of the financial crisis. The first rule agreed is the reduction of the budget ceiling from 2021 to 145 million.

The introduction of a handicap system in the aerodynamic development has also been approved, which will allow the teams in the lower area to have more time for testing in the wind tunnel and in CFD development compared to the big favorites.

Finally, there will be restrictions on the development of engines both in the current campaign and in 2021.

Ricciardo: Switching from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari is easier than from Red Bull to Renault

Daniel Ricciardo’s first season dressed in Renault colors had more shadows than lights. This car did not live up to expectations in most cases, but we knew it was not possible or at least we are not surprised.

However, our Australian’s talent drove the French team throughout the campaign and when he finished in the points, his results were usually quite positive, although the lack of consistency was clear.

In the end, last year Renault’s star signing managed to finish in ninth place in the Drivers’ Championship with 54 points and fourth place in Italy had been his best result. In terms of their change of scenery from Red Bull to the French team, the difference is quite remarkable because they went from an aspirant to fight for wins at specific moments to a team that has not followed the evolution they have had since 2016.

It has not been a great year, although I do not see myself as the ninth best driver on the grid. I do not look at it too much because I think I am better.

I want to finish ninth in the next few years and have the excuse that I am better than that result, but that is what it is?

No, and I do not look ninth either!

If Nico had scored a hundred points, I would be very disappointed with myself. If I had put five together, it would have been a fantastic season for me.

I know I had more than him, I guess I can not be disappointed.

It is always difficult to get to a new team, but there have been people who have done it before. I had to adapt more because i is easier to go from Toro Rosso to Red Bull or go from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari because you are facing a car that has more grip.

That is easier than going from Red Bull to Renault. I was happy with my adaptation, but there were races where I was not satisfied with myself because I expected more, but I will improve this season.

Marko believes that Ricciardo’s mistake was to believe Renault

One of the most unexpected news in Formula 1 in 2018 was the announcement of the departure of Daniel Ricciardo from his then team, Red Bull, to Renault.

Very few expected our Perth-born rider to leave a team that had achieved up to four victories in the campaign to compete under the command of another team that was struggling with the rest of the rivals in the middle of the grid.

However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has suggested that the Australian’s first choices were Mercedes and Ferrari, and when these were ruled out, he opted for the best possible fate among the other teams, as his continuity in Milton Keynes’; squad seemed quite unlikely due to the tension with Max Verstappen, which grew after the incident at last season’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2018.

All of this was recounted in the documentary ‘Drive To Survive’; produced by Netflix, in which we can see all of Ricciardo’s crossroads at a crucial moment in his career, as his contract with Red Bull was due to expire at the end of 2018.

Also, Marko believes that his ex-pupil is not getting the results he expected from Enstone’s men.

The story should have been that he decided in the summer whether to go to Ferrari or Mercedes, or finally stay at Red Bull. In the end, everything turned out very differently than Ricciardo imagined, and very different from what the people of Netflix wanted.

Renault was showing us graphics over and over again where it looked like his engine would be huge for the next year, and he believed it.

The doors of Ferrari and Mercedes were closed and with us there had been some tension between the two drivers from Baku.
